Center for Couples & Self

Find yourself. Find each other.

MY APPROACH

Fear, disappointment, resentment, and despair. These are some of the painful, private experiences that often bring people into therapy or coaching. These same experiences can be difficult to access, stay with, or even name—especially in professional environments where composure is valued, or in families and cultures where struggle is quietly endured.

Whether in a therapeutic or coaching context, the space should allow for full contact with what initially feels overwhelming. We need room to be with what is present without rushing to resolve it. This often requires the courage to slow down and “not know” for a moment, creating the possibility for something new to emerge. Doing so depends on trust in the person across from us and a clear, steady sense of direction. It is my priority to ensure you feel supported, respected, and guided throughout our work together. You can expect an earnest, nonjudgmental commitment to exploring what matters most—whether that is pain, performance, or purpose—as well as a readiness to recognize moments of aliveness, clarity, and genuine connection when they arise.

PROFESSIONAL

I am a licensed psychologist based in San Diego, CA, with active licenses in both California (PSY31412) and Iowa (083818). I earned my Ph.D. from Iowa State University and completed clinical training in adult and child/adolescent outpatient services at Harvard’s Cambridge Health Alliance. My professional background spans university counseling centers, public hospitals, juvenile corrections, group practices, and medical education.

In addition to my clinical work, I have provided consulting and coaching for leaders in healthcare, tech, and education. My clients have included early-career physicians, senior executives, and organizational teams facing challenges around burnout, emotional resilience, decision-making, and relational effectiveness. My research has focused on human performance in high-stakes environments—such as disaster simulations, group leadership, and emotionally demanding interpersonal roles—with publications on trauma, mental illness stigma, help-seeking, and group dynamics (learn more here).

While I continue to work with individuals seeking therapy for early life neglect, abuse, and chronic misattunement (sometimes called developmental trauma), I also partner with professionals and leaders navigating the emotional complexity of modern work. Whether the goal is healing, performance, or growth, I bring a deep commitment to presence, trust, and insight.

PERSONAL

My roles as husband, father, friend, psychologist, and coach each matter deeply to me. I strive to show up fully in these roles, knowing they offer constant invitations to learn and grow. I’m best described as an introverted extrovert—someone who values meaningful connection in both big and small moments. I find joy in group hikes, dinners, concerts, board games, and beach days, as well as quiet afternoons alongside my wife, daughter, and dogs.

If you are an individual or couple interested in working with me, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. You can expect a quick reply, usually within 1 business day. I truly look forward to partnering with you.
